of the Historical towns and villages in the area

Aguilar de la
Frontera

remained so until the end of the Middle Ages. Of its Andalusian past,
there are parts of the walls and towers on the hill over the village,

where the largest number of archaeological sites have been found in
the province of Cordoba, with remains that date back as far as the Palaeolithic Age. The castle

Montemayor |
This is a
fortress town with a view over low cultivated countryside. It may
well have existed in the year 2000 BC, though the actual settlement
dates from 1340 built around a mediaeval castle. The church of the
Assumption is a blend of Gothic and Mudejar, plus later reforms.
There are several hermitages in the area, as well as the remains of
the Castle of Dos Hermanas, originally Moorish. The town is around 40 minutes drive from Iznajar.

Montilla |
The town of
Montilla is famed above all for its wines, and some of its many
bodégas (wine cellars) may be visited. There are grape gathering
festivals held at the end of August/beginning of September during
which the grapes are pressed in the old fashioned way. The wines
include Fino (similar to Sherry) Amontillado (dark golden colour and
strong aroma) and Oloroso (matured white wine, often very strong).
The wines are famed for being strong (15% + ) and are said to be
guaranteed not to leave the drinker with a hangover! The town is
around 45 minutes drive from Iznajar.

Priego de Cordoba |
This lovely town
is well off the tourist map, but is certainly worth a visit. In the
heart of La Subbetica National Park, the town has an abundance of
Baroque churches and architecture, a Roman fountain, and the beautiful
tiny streets of Le Barrio de la Villa. The town is around 30 minutes
drive from Iznajar. Try

This is a Moorish
town at the foot of a rocky range, from where it the town gets its
name Subayra which means rock in Arabic. The 9th Century castle is
perched on top of one of these enormous rocks. Not far from the town
is La Cueva de los Murcielagos (cave of the bats) with cave
paintings. It has an outstanding vantage point over this extraordinary
